the medium we use, the medium we are.
the more i think about it and the more i'm conviced of this thing.
email, msn, skype, facebook, snail letter, post in blogs.
they all reveal different side of ourselves, filtering with more or less strenght our thoughts and ideas.
I think there are several studies on what emails have created in the past: destroyed wedding, created loves, devasted your relationship with the boss,
when you send the email to the wrong address because you use the fill-in option in the address list of outlook.. who didn't undergo this wonderful experience?!?!!? i did..
not to mention msn and all those communication media like facebook myspace and so on.
I hear stories of people who met on the web, and actually found to be good friends, if not even more; my mom that finds her middle school best friend thru internet, after 45 years, and me reconnecting with people after 10 years. I can see in her sweet old eyes my sweet nonnina every week through skype even ifwe are on the 2 opposite sides of the pond, and we have 70 years of difference, I find myself talking to my mom more than i used to do perhaps when i was at home physically..
so i think and i wonder,
how did our grandparents manage to live without these infinite communication possibilities we have now? I think at my grandparents, immigrants in the states, with letters that took weeks and months to get from one side to the other of the world.
what were they writing in those letter?were they more focused on the important things? on what "it really matters" in life (?) ? or they were writing just what we write too but on hourly basis? were those letters more meaningful than our facebook message or msn videochat?
It might be, it is actually true that you can't smell the paper of the letter on which you have printed an email, is not going to smell your mother's parfume your significant other's one, perhaps only for few years more though before some nose-computer will be in the store..
I don't really have a precise idea on this thing. I only know that all these things are so much part of my life, that more than once i perceived my self like a laptop waiting to find a wireless connection and go online.. check email.. and "you've got mail" is a message that always (almost) make me happy.
